For 10 years Karn Nielsen has volunteered at Bee Kind Garden. She says "During one of the Bee Kind Garden sessions we bring the kids to climb on the climbing wall at the Mountain Gear retail store, and it’s kind of like taking a kid to the seashore for the first time, just the kind of magic that happens.
The kids are fairly apprehensive. They’re very quiet. And yet, you get them climbing and there are a lot of analogies with building trust and facing their fears that they can then take out into their lives. We’ve had some kids up on the wall like one girl had been up and down numerous times and was just feeling very comfortable, and then she heard the Velcro on her harness, which isn’t anything to do with her safety, but she heard the Velcro rip a little bit, and she totally panicked up there. And I tried to talk her down and finally I just had to lower her down she was so panicked.
And we immediately engulfed her in arms and told her that when she was ready -- that it had been really scary and that when she was ready she could have another chance. And we showed her how her safety was never at risk. And about five minutes later, she came back and she goes, 'I’m ready now,' and up she went, and it was just a real success story for the whole group."
